Consumer Perception: The Rise Of Market Research In The Automotive Industry

Knowing your target market can be a company’s key to success in modern business. Niche marketing, particularly with the availability of much more targeted advertisement using television commercials and online ads, is growing in popularity because of its high-yielding results.

With car companies putting out commercials and ads specifically targeting groups of consumers, like women, young people, parents with small children, and even successful CEOs, does anyone wonder where
they’re getting their information? The answer: market research firms. The business of capturing information about segments of the consumer population has become a business in and of itself – and a big one at that.

For example, let’s start looking back at 2005 when Harris Interactive – the 15th largest marked research firm in the world – conducted a study to find out what automotive brands people felt were not only the most technologically savvy, but also which brands were perceived to be driven by socialites. Six brands made both lists: Volvo, Jaguar, BMW, Lexus, Mitsubishi, and Isuzu.

While the results are no surprise to the first four on the list, Mitsubishi and Isuzu have never actively tried to position themselves in either market. Currently, Isuzu offers four models to U.S.

consumers – its high-performance SUV “Ascender” – and three pickup trucks: the i-290 Extended Cab, the i-370 Crew Cab, and the i-370 Extended Cab. One wouldn’t necessarily assume that when the majority of your line are pickups – traditionally marketed to Middle America for their rugged hauling and towing capacities – that you’d be perceived as a company known for progressive technology and appealing to socialites. But, in all honesty, that should be no surprise either.

Isuzu’s recent upgrades, like the i-370′s Crew Cab Comfort Package proves that Isuzu drivers appreciate luxury as much as anyone else.

It includes high-back 8-way power driver seats (and 6-way power seats for the front passenger) with lumbar support and integrated adjustable head restraints. The driver window controls are one-touch automatic and the steering wheel is leather-wrapped. In addition to the CFC-free refrigerant air conditioning and an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, it offers a state-of-the-art 6-speaker audio system.

The i-370 also excels when it comes to desired safety features. The pickup boasts an automatic front-passenger airbag suppression system, power locks, remote keyless entry, and a content theft-deterrent alarm system. The interior is available in cloth or leather.

With ten exterior paint options to choose from like Deep Crimson Metallic and Pacific Blue, the pickup looks like it should sport a much higher price tag. It’s truly and impressive looking vehicle.

Driving the i-370 is bound to prove that this ain’t your grandfather’s pickup. All that power handles as beautifully as many luxury cars handle thanks to a hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion power steering system , triple door seals to block road noise, and Isuzu’s own Electronic Traction Control.

So with all this, it’s no real surprise that Isuzu ranked right up there with legacies of luxury like BMW and Lexus. In an effort to design the best possible product for their buyers, they ultimately opened the door to markets they weren’t specifically aiming for. But that just goes to show you that comfort, performance, and style appeal to everyone.

 Unless you’ve been living under an Internet rock, you’ve probably heard the buzz about Niche Marketing. Right now it’s the hottest marketing topic online.

Is it a new concept?

Well on the Internet maybe, but if like me, you’ve been involved in direct response marketing in the ‘Bricks and Mortar’ world then it isn’t – that’s the way we’ve done things since time immemorial.

So what’s this Niche Marketing thing all about?

If you have ever taken Marketing 101 then you’ll have heard of the old marketing adage : “Find a need and fill it” -that’s what “Niche Marketing” is all about. Finding a “focused” group of people, with a specialized interest, eager to buy (The Niche) and promoting a suitable product or service to all those interested in buying it (Marketing).

Let me give you a few examples of these Niches :

Recipes Golf Fishing Health and Fitness Travel Collectibles Dating Dog Training Satellite TV Beauty Tips Astrology Cats Bartending Alternative Health Hand-poured Candles Gourmet Foods Gambling Mortgages Credit Cards Music Jewellery

…… the list just goes on and on and these are just the main headings, there are niches within each of these niches … Think of a subject and there’s likely a niche market for it…

But the name of the game is to find a “tightly focused” niche. The reason for this that if you target a general market the competition is fierce and it’s hard, if not impossible, for the little guy to get a foothold.

When you narrow down the size of the market you eradicate most of the heavy hitters with bottomless advertising budgets, because these guys aren’t interested in making a few thousand bucks a year from these tiny specialized markets, they’re after millions from mass markets…

… And let’s face it if you’re a little guy you simply can’t be everything to everybody, so you must pick a specific focus (Niche) for your business. For example don’t target “Fishing”, instead target “Fishing Baits” or “Fishing Lures” both of which have a much more specific focus…

…Get the idea?

Once you narrow down the size of the market you have an automatic advantage over larger companies. Here’s why :

* You can quickly become an expert in your niche (if you’re not already)

* It’s easier to keep current with a narrowly focused market niche

* You can respond faster to changes in the market

* You can build close relationships with key customers that will be hard to compete with

It isn’t a matter of putting up a web site and then sitting back and waiting for the money to roll in – “build it and they will come” may have worked for Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, but it doesn’t work that way on the Internet – if you do that you’ll be waiting a long time.

If you want a successful niche business, you have to work at it just like any other business – if you’re prepared to put in the effort though the rewards can be significant.

Are you like me and you’re beginning to see that creating income online through internet marketing is a golden opportunity?  Something that we’re at the forefront of, as it will just continue to grow as more and more people come online.  And are you seeing that information is endless, and that people already consume huge amounts of information in the form of newspapers, magazines, books, professional journals, business journals, and on. People will never stop wanting information and if you can create information products (which is actually fairly easy to do once you learn how) to satisfy their information hunger in new ways, they will gladly pay you for it.

One of the most fruitful areas of internet marketing is found in niche marketing. This is where it really gets fun! There are endless niches and as you begin doing some research, you’ll see what I mean.

There are many aspects to creating a successful online business, of which good ideas are just one; but please don’t underestimate the power of having lots of good ideas that you can get excited about.

There are several great ways to generate a rich flow of ideas for niche marketing. One of the most important things to do is to keep an idea journal.  A simple notebook will do. Keep it handy to jot down your ideas as they occur to you. Of course you can also use your computer, or anything that works for you.  Just be sure to have something handy so you don’t miss any of your ideas. Your ideas may seem at first to just trickle in, but as you make some of the following idea generators habit, you’ll be opening the flow.

You can generate ideas from time spent both online and off, and you’ll want to do both to be most effective.

To stimulate ideas away from your computer, heighten your everyday awareness as you go about your life. Pay attention to advertisements you encounter. Who are they selling to? What are they selling? What angles are they using to sell it?

Another excellent thing to do is spend some time studying the magazine racks at a big bookstore like Borders or Barnes & Noble.  Or at the grocery store or library. Generally, the larger the selection the more ideas you can come away with. Look for 3 or 4 magazines on the same subject. If you’ve found 3 or 4 on the same subject, you are now aware of a trend. Read the magazines, look at the ads. You can see who the audience is and what they’re interested in. You can see what is being advertized to them. Keep looking for trends of information wherever you are looking.

As for online research, there are many resources available.  There are information product banks where they have articles, reports, and e-books available for resale. Browsing for an hour or so will give you lots of great ideas about what is selling well. Once again, look for trends. Clickbank.com is a great place to start. There’s also a great site that, in effect, makes Clickbank searchable at cbmall.com. Look at categories you have an interest in. Look at best-selling categories. Look for ways you could combine information into a new product of your own. Look for missing information that you could provide.

Also spend some time on Amazon.com, browsing their best-seller lists, seeing what’s selling most in subjects of interest to you.

Another excellent resource available to you are online discussion groups. Many such groups exist and you can usually join them for free. Lots of times in these groups there are people with problems they’re trying to solve. Listen in and see if you can come up with something to help them solve their problem.

You can also find great ideas by going to web directories. These are like phone books or catalogs of the web. My favorite so far is dmoz.com which is catalogued by humans and kept up to date. No dead links or stale web pages!  Spend some time browsing here.

Once you get some ideas going from the outside in, you’ll begin to get more ideas from the inside out as well. Keep that notebook handy!

To help you discern your own market niche, try using “where” and “who” questions like the following:

“Where” Questions

Where do you consistently find kindred spirits?
Where are you most credible?
Where is there the greatest need coupled with the greatest appreciation for your work?
Where do the people who need your work most often have breakdowns that would cause them to hire you?

“Who” Questions

Who is naturally drawn to you and to your work?
To whom are the things that seem obvious to you a revelation?
Who is traveling a path that you have successfully walked yourself?
Whose language do you speak?
Whose concerns can you reliably anticipate and address?
Whom is it easy for you to serve?

Knowing and working from your strengths are essential parts of developing your niche marketing strategy

There are probably several ways in which your strengths can add value in the marketplace. Therefore, developing a niche is a process of exploring several possibilities and gradually refining them.

You might think about developing a market niche as akin to planting a garden. You start by planting lots of seeds rather close together. As these germinate, you keep the strongest sprouts and remove the others. As your garden grows, you will continue to thin and prune until only the strongest and healthiest plants remain. Along the way you give away or compost the seedlings and trimmings; nothing is lost.

As you refine your niche marketing strategy, you’ll grow in integrity and confidence. With time, you’ll know with certainty which customers are right for you, and you’ll attract more of them.

Are You Afraid of Using Niche Marketing Because it May Turn Away Business?

As you refine your market niche, you may experience some anxiety that focusing on your niche will deprive you of needed business. What do you do if someone outside of your niche wants to hire you?

Talk to them. See how well you fit. There is nothing about a focused niche that says you cannot work with a variety of clients. The point of a niche is not to confine you, but to create the healthiest ecosystem for your business. The longer you persist in marketing to everyone and anyone who could conceivably hire you, the more certain it is that you will burn out, leaving yourself and your clients or customers dissatisfied. In order to make a compelling declaration of what you are up to, you must be willing to say “no” to those clients, projects, and possibilities that are not well within the scope of your passion and your expertise.

It is important to look to the market to see what your prospective customers and clients want. But look with a keen eye for how the needs and desires of the market match your strengths, talents, and passions. Say “no” to the opportunities that are a poor match, so that your vision and resources can be focused on the projects and relationships that are most likely to succeed.
